Difference Between Reversible and Irreversible Cell Injury
Cell injury occurs when a cell is exposed to harmful conditions. Depending on the severity and duration of the injury, the damage may be reversible or irreversible.
Reversible Cell Injury (RCI)
Reversible cell injury is a mild form of cell damage. If the harmful cause is removed in time, the cell can return to its normal structure and function.
- Cell swelling may occur.
- ATP production decreases.
- Mitochondria show mild swelling.
- Ribosomes may detach from rough ER.
- Chromatin may show clumping.
- Lysosomes remain generally intact.
- Cell can recover after removal of the cause.
Irreversible Cell Injury (IRCI)
Irreversible cell injury is a severe form of cell damage. When the damage becomes too severe, the cell cannot recover and ultimately dies.
- Severe mitochondrial damage occurs.
- ATP production is markedly reduced.
- Plasma membrane loses its integrity.
- Ribosomes are lost or dispersed.
- Lysosomes may rupture and release enzymes.
- Nuclear changes occur: Pyknosis → Karyorrhexis → Karyolysis.
- Cell death occurs.
